Sound credits
Some practice tools in Sanctuary Mix Training play real recordings made by other people. This page says where each one comes from, its licence, and what we changed. Those licences, not our terms, set what you may do with these sounds.
Drums, cymbals, a hand clap and the piano
From the Versilian Community Sample Library (VCSL), by Versilian Studios, released under CC0 1.0: anyone may use it for anything, and no credit is needed. We credit it anyway. The piano is its Steinway B grand.
What we changed: we cut single hits and notes from the library's files, made them mono, set their levels, and made small copies for the web. The computer plays them into grooves and parts. A piano note between two of the library's notes is the one below it, played a semitone higher.
The classical guitar
From the University of Iowa Musical Instrument Samples, Electronic Music Studios (Lawrence Fritts): a Raimundo 118 classical guitar with nylon strings, played by Brian Penkrot and recorded by Shane Hoose and Zach Zubow on 11 December 2011. The University's terms say the samples may be used for any projects, without restrictions.
What we changed: we cut single notes from its scales, tuned them to concert pitch (they were recorded 13 to 40 cents flat), took out the rumble below the lowest note, set their levels, and made small copies for the web. The computer strums them. Iowa has no steel-string guitar, so the training's acoustic is this classical one.
The voices
Sermons by C. H. Spurgeon (1834 to 1892), read aloud by volunteers for LibriVox, which gives its recordings to the public domain. No credit is needed. We credit each reader by the name LibriVox gives.
- Mark Barnes: "Christ Glorified as the Builder of His Church" (sermon 191, 2 May 1858), from Spurgeon's Sermons May 1858 (the recording, 60.8 to 76.0 seconds in).
- Alan Chant: "Looking Unto Jesus" (sermon 195, 23 May 1858), from the same book (the recording, 40.9 to 55.7 seconds in).
- Lauren Randall: Talks to Farmers (1882), chapter 1, "The Sluggard's Farm" (the recording, 58.9 to 74.5 seconds in).
What we changed: we cut a short passage from each reading, set its level, and made small copies for the web. The readers didn't shout or whisper: where a tool needs a shout or a whisper, the computer makes a phrase louder or quieter, and the tool says so. In Tame a sermon and Gate a lectern mic, four of the five phrases in Alan Chant's passage play in a new order, with pauses of about half a second between them. These volunteers recorded for LibriVox, not for Sanctuary Mix.
Which tool plays what
Find the boom (Level 1, lesson 5)
Real: the three readings, and in round 3 the piano and the guitar. Computer-made: the stage rumble, the page thump and round 2's steady noise.
Tame a sermon, and Gate a lectern mic (Level 1, lesson 6)
Real: Alan Chant's reading, made louder and quieter phrase by phrase. Computer-made: the faint room hiss under it, and the room noise between sentences.
The practice band (Level 2, lessons 1, 3, 4 and 6)
Real: the snare, hi-hat, cymbal, piano and classical guitar, played by the computer. It plays in the practice band, Make space, Which band was boosted?, Compress the lead vocal, Ride the vocal and the tempo delay. Computer-made: the kick, bass, electric guitar, keys pad and singers, and the pink noise.
The phase lab (Level 2, lesson 2)
Real: the snare, toms and cymbals. Computer-made: the kick, the bass, and each pair's second mic (a copy of the first, moved in time or flipped).
Gate a tom mic, and Glue the drum group (Level 2, lesson 5)
Real: the toms, snare and hi-hat. Computer-made: the kick.
Line up the clap (Level 3, lesson 4)
Real: a hand clap. The flashing circle stands in for the video.
Ring it out, and Name the ring (Level 3, lesson 5)
Real: Mark Barnes's reading, as the helper at the mic. Computer-made: the rings, and the tones in Name the ring.
Still computer-made
We don't have a recording we may use yet of a drum-kit kick (the library's bass drum is a concert drum, with its weight higher up than a kit kick's), a steel-string acoustic, an electric guitar, a bass guitar, a keys pad, sung vocals or the sound of a church room. For now the computer makes those, and every tool says which parts are.
If a recording doesn't load (no connection, an older browser, or Data Saver switched on), the tool plays its computer-made version instead and says so.
On slow or costly data, you can choose the computer-made version yourself: while a tool's recordings load, press "Use the computer-made version (no download)" under its name. The download stops, and this phone or computer remembers your choice for every tool until you press "Use the recordings again".
Every file
Each recording is a short AAC (.m4a) or Opus (.webm) file on our own site, downloaded only when you press Play, and only the ones that tool needs.

Using these sounds yourself
Our licence and terms cover the guides and the training. They don't change what these recordings' own licences allow: every one here is free to reuse under its licence above, whatever our terms say. Our copies are cut and levelled for the training, so for your own projects, start from the libraries themselves.
